The Rev. J. Bruce Baker, Pastor

We Care Teams have been a part of this parish for over twenty-five years. They were first formed for the purpose of deepening the fellowship life of the parish and to ensure the care of each member. Every member is part of a "We Care Team". Responsibilities fall into three primary areas: welcoming and ushering at Sunday worship, the hosting of coffee hour/ fellowship time after worship, and the care and support of team members through prayer, encouragement and love.

Intergenerational Events are scheduled seasonally. These events provide opportunity for all generations to come together and share in fellowship. They are also wonderful opportunities for members and friends to relax and be together, and for new-comers to our church community to make new friends.

On January 27th we celebrated Robert Burns’ birthday, with a potluck supper, including Scottish food.

Fall Family Retreat – Our first “Family Retreat”, held at the Stony Point Center, was a true blessing for all who attended. Perhaps the most telling sign of that came in the evaluation period where children, who came initially only because they were forced to, were asking how soon we were going to have another retreat.

The focus of the retreat was to look at who we were as individual families, how that extended to the church family, and even further, how it called us to be part of the whole family of God’s people. We had devotions. There was time for parents to talk with each other and with their children. There was time to play and study, time to relax and enjoy the fellowship of others in our church family.

The interaction among the children was a wonder to behold, as older children cared for and about younger ones, whether they knew them well or not. Even when there were some “issues” with the children, they were able to see what was happening and in their own way work toward reconciliation. Parent after parent commented on the value of being together and sharing their concerns and joys and fears so that they did not feel so alone in their struggles to raise their children in a positive, Christian environment. Ideas for future activities were generated by those present, ranging from having family movie nights in fellowship hall to having the older children participate as lay readers in our weekly service.

When asked what was the best thing about the retreat, one parent said “This feels like family.” What more is there to say?
